Wherever she goes, a mother sees the graffiti of her homeless son. She interprets his tags as messages directed to her and wants to respond. She begins to write SON beneath his tags. One day, she suddenly receives a response. Below SON now reads: Hi, Mom. The documentary film SON portrays a conversation unfolding right now, about a bond stronger than spray paint and ink. A bond so enduring that not even the city transit cleaning crew can erase it.
Leona Cauklija is an artist and director based in Stockholm. She studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, as well as in Copenhagen. In her work, she explores how different artistic forms—and their different audiences—can meet and establish dialogue between worlds that rarely touch otherwise. The film Son was awarded Best Documentary at the Tampere Film Festival in Finland (2026), and received a special mention at the Uppsala Short Film Festival (2025). Leona is currently working on her next production, Modersmål, with a premiere expected in 2028.
